Consecration of land at Broadshade

On Sunday 26th June 2011 we stood on the land that will eventually hold our new building. It was an amazing feeling. After all the years of dreams and plans, to finally stand on the threshold of literally 'something concrete' had a huge impact on everyone there. We were joined by the Bishop who blessed the ground and even joined by some neighbours from the Broadshade estate.

Many thanks to Maria Ballantyne for the following photographs which represent only a tiny proportion of the day's pictures.

Not an outdoor font - just a wee bit wet!                                                        The worship was 'in tents'

Visit to South Korea

Seven members of our Young Adults Group travelled to South Korea for 2-3 weeks in August 2011. They were based at Hak Dong Church in Gwangju which is led by Pastor Yang and his wife who worshipped with us in Westhill while doing his PhD at Aberdeen University.  Pastor Yang's sons, Nate and Caleb, are still here with our congregation in Westhill.  Charles (church elder with responsibility for the young adults group) and Stephen have both travelled previously to Gwangju and Hak Dong Church are delighted to welcome back a larger team led by Charles.  Charles, Rebekah, Stephen, Miriam, Michael and Nate & Caleb valued your prayers as they developed their ministry programme which included outreach to university and college students, teaching English, cafe ministry, and youth discipleship among other things.  Their desire is to be used by God and grow in ministry while in this country and culture which is very different from our own.

Steve Townsend's Sacrifice

Over the years we have undertaken some very different sponsorship events and this was certainly the most dramatic and generated the    most interest. Funds were needed to purchase a large tent for youth events. As youth overseer Steve volunteered (was volunteered !). He agreed  to lose his hair and beard - shorn to a fuzz. After an all age service he was seated at the front, draped in a sheet and was attacked with very large scissors. Forty minutes passed and the pile of hair on the floor grew and grew. Finally the task was over and an aerodynamic Steve arose. Everyone was impressed, however his wife Jenny needed time to recover. This was indeed above and beyond the call of duty!

Ceilidh

A ceilidh had been planned for the end of 2010 but the severe weather caused a postponement. However, with a different format, the event took place in June and was very well attended. The ceilidh band consisted of our own congregational members as were the 'entertainers' for the night. We were treated to some wonderful dance music, some Scots poetry, a Doric tale and some mellow, reflective music. A silent auction was also held on the night with some generously donated articles. All agreed it was a braw nicht!

Westhill Gala

Once again we were blessed with a sunny day and whilst the official Gala time is 2pm until 4pm the 'unofficial' time now stretches one hour each side. Our site was on a thoroughfare and so there was a constant stream of visitors passing the tent. The new building and Holiday Bible Club were the subjects of numerous discussions. There was strong support from the young adults and their assistance with balloons was notable - even if just for those they managed to release before handing them over!
